Haig,

Thank you for your comment about my brief review of "On Intelligence."

To be honest I do not remember saying that one can not have intelligence without consciousness, but if I did your point is well-taken.

I assume you are a new listener, so I hope you will become a regular. The point you bring up is a good starting point for discussion, so I hope you will consider starting a new thread on the Discussion Forum at http://brainscienceforum.com. Feel free to start a thread for Episode 2 or begin a new thread in the area on Consciousness, which is already pretty active.

Also, Jeff Hawkins will be a guest on an upcoming episode, so be sure to subscribe!

One nitpick criticism regarding your comment in this podcast that you can't have intelligence without consciousness. I disagree. Barring pansychism and other such philosophical leaps, most organisms on this planet have very simple nervous systems, with nothing resembling a cortex, yet they act intelligently. You only have to look at certain insects like jumping spiders, where recent research shows remarkably intelligent behavior for such a rudimentary nervous system, and I wouldn't think most people would say those spiders have any consciousness (qualia etc, awareness sure, but the harder consciousness, no).
