No fancy graphics yet, but the Brain Science Podcast Forum is now available. I have been getting great comments and emails and I hope this will give people a better chance to share their ideas with not just me, but with everyone else.

  1. In one of your recent podcasts (15?) you stated that only the great apes are self aware.
I understand that the mirror-dot test showed that elephants are also self-aware.

  2. Matthew,

Thanks so much for your post about elephants. Do you have a source? When I was recording that I was quoting Goldberg’s book but in the back of my mind I also wondered about elephants, dolphins and whales.

Feel free to post also at http://brainscienceforum.com.

  3. Dr.Campbell,

The most recent article I have read was “I, Elephant” By Kaspar Mossmanin in the February 2007 issue of Scientific American Mind.

The study referred to was “Self-recognition in an Asian elephant”. By: Plotnik, Joshua M.; de Waal, Frans B. M.; Reiss, Diana. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 11/7/2006, Vol. 103 Issue 45, p17053-17057

btw, thanks for the podcasts, I have subscribed and downloaded as many as I could. They form part of my 2×45min commute each day. I have found them a good balance between layspeak and authoritative.

Instead of listening to incendiary shock-jocks and frustrating news I can be sure to have nearly two hours of informative and interesting material that can be paused and replayed if I need.
I rate your podcast in the group of Lancet, BMJ, JAMA, NEJM, and Science. Not as entertaining as Prairie Home Companion perhaps, but far better presented than a Neuroscience podcast I could name! ;)

    Thanks.
