“Brain Rules” with John Medina (BSP 37)

by Ginger Campbell, MD on May 16, 2008

John Medina, PhD

Episode 37 of the Brain Science Podcast is an interview with Dr. John Medina, author of Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School. We talk about how exercise, sleep, and stress effect our brains with an emphasis on practical advice for healthier brain function. We also look at how research on memory, vision and the brain’s attention system suggests how we can improve our ability to learn and our ability to share ideas with others.

Dr. Medina’s focus is on considering real world examples of how our schools and work environments could be reformed to utilize the growing knowledge of neuroscience. But he also stresses the importance of compiling sufficient experimental data before embarking on new programs.

Check your editing – near the end of this episode you’ve got a spot where you have a Navy ad, then three words, then a Navy ad. It dosn’t sound like that’s what you wanted, and it does not met your usual high standards. BTW – I’ve just been over to Book and Ideas and have subscribed there too.

Thank you for mentioning this problem. I have been working with Wizzard Media, the company that inserts the ads to fix the problem.

I’ve not had a chance to listen to the interview yet, but I checked out the link to the Brain Rules website. The DVD looks highly entertaining as well as educational. Will keep my eye out for this when it’s launched in the UK in August.

What a great interview. This episode came in a feed for another podcast I just started listening to a few days ago. The odd thing is that last night I started reading Brain Rules, and then this morning I started the podcast having no idea Dr. Medina was on it. Anyway, now I am really looking forward to the book. As a training developer this interview hit in several areas of my work (and personal) life. Thank you.

I think I have found the last page on the net. I listened to part of this interview and then ran out of time and realised I’ve only scratched the surface of your site….which is truly an amazing collection of podcasts. Thank you! Dr Medina is an interesting speaker and I have followed his ideas and relate to quite a few in daily life.

Merry xmas and regards
Joanna
