Well, I'm just responding superficially to the first posting and saying: thank goodness, the polls reversed themselves as the electorate learned more about Palin: most women viewed her negatively. As a Canadian, it floors me that almost 50% of the US electorate actually voted for the McCalin/Palin ticket. I heard Palin speak many times and she can hardly put together a grammatical sentence. Her sentences just run on and can hardly be parsed much of the time. Oh well. We currently have a religious right party in our country, so I shouldn't talk, I guess. (The ex-leader of our 'ruling' [fortunately minority] party is still a senior level member of parliament yet he believes in young earth theory and not Darwinianism. Go figure...)

Congratulations on electing Obama/Biden. Hopefully the demographic trend will continue as is and favour rationalism over anti-intellectualism.

"If anyone could make Christian theocracy smell like apple pie, Sarah Palin could."

Unfortunately, this irrational fear Atheists have of a theocracy seems to be the norm. Every time a "Comservitive" runs for or enters high office, we suddenly are on a verge of a theocracy ; George Bush, John Ascraoft etc. - it never materializes...abortion is still legal , feminist activist run wild and churches are still being coerced into telling their sheep how wonderful the UN is. via 5O1C3.

Each day America inches closer to a tyranny, but a Theocracy(narrowly defined) will not happen as long as Republacrats remain in power. So "rationalist"(those who adhere to particular a set of of belief systems) and defenders of "science" (scientific orthodoxy) should be of good cheer. :)

EB,

Well, actually WE are Primates! However, on a more practical level it would be nice if she also acknowledged that global warming is REAL.

Its hard to imagine someone wanting to prevent polar bears from being classified as endangered without suspecting that they are a pawn of the oil industry!

Ginger Campbell, MD:

"It is not unreasonable to want our leaders to respect current scientific knowledge and the Constitutional separation of church and state."

By current scientific knowledge I assume you mean she should respect the idea that humans evolved from primates...

I would tend to agree with Mina and Drew Westin in past years. This year is different. If you follow the flow on a sites like Twitter, the hate, derision, and comments wishing physical harm towards Palin really scares me.

The comments towards the other three follow the normal political year. "Your candidate is a dirty dog that will rob us blind and could not lead us out of a paper bag" and "mine will save the country and make us all rich and healthy. " That's normal and healthy.

The hate being expressed against Palin is what is different this year and concerns me.

What a great interview. This episode came in a feed for another podcast I just started listening to a few days ago. The odd thing is that last night I started reading Brain Rules, and then this morning I started the podcast having no idea Dr. Medina was on it. Anyway, now I am really looking forward to the book. As a training developer this interview hit in several areas of my work (and personal) life. Thank you.

In response to John Little's comment about the left working to destroy and denigrate anyone they don't like...

The work of Drew Westin, author of The Political Brain. He showed in his study of both Republicans and Democrats that political bias affects your interpretation of what the other side does. Funny that most Dems would accuse the Republicans of expressing hate, while John accuses the Dems of the very same thing. When we see it in the candidates we like, we are likely to excuse it. When the other candidate does it, we attack.

There are many statements made by the founding fathers concerning the importance of God in America.
Unless you are willing to say that they were all telling lies it is hard to believe they were probably deists rather than Christians.

Benjamin Franklin: | Portrait of Ben Franklin
“ God governs in the affairs of man. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured in the Sacred Writings that except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it. I firmly believe this. I also believe that, without His concurring aid, we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel” –Constitutional Convention of 1787 | original manuscript of this speech

What scares me is the hate being expressed towards Sarah Palin from the left. From saying she would be raped in New York, to the Larry flint porno movie, to the thousands of despicable comments made on Twitter.

I can understand not agreeing with someone and working to make sure they are not elected but it seems to me that is not enough for the left. They feel they must also work to destroy and denigrate anyone they don't like.
