Preventing Child and Adolescent Drug Abuse in Your Community

A recent report from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) looked at trends in drug abuse throughout the U.S. While many of the reported numbers are stable, one alarming figure included the rise in the number of youths abusing prescription drugs found in their home. The most common drugs of abuse included the narcotic pain killers Oxycontin and Hydrocodone in their branded forms of Vicodin and Percocet.

On this week’s MedicCast episode, we will examine some community prevention resources found online for both medical professionals and teens and their parents. We’ll also review the common signs and symptoms of overdose for opiod anagesics and some special concerns regarding the presentation in combination drugs containing acetaminophen.
